History
Gelderlander horses are driving horses. They have a high stepping action which looks wonderful when pulling carriages.
Unfortunately Nathan did not enjoy being driven. He hated being in a harness and being very close to another horse. His old owners decided to just use him for riding, but unfortunately they needed to move away from the area and couldn’t take him with them. Nathan’s old owners looked around very carefully for someone to look after him, and wanted someone to care for him for the rest of his life. One of the Trust Committee members spotted Nathan, and so he came to the Epona Trust in February 2013.
Nathan found that he was skilled at jumping and had great fun teaching more advanced level riders. He also enjoyed regular solo hacks around the Itchen Valley Country Park bridle route with his sponsor Kate.
Latest Update
At almost 30 years old Nathan was retired with neurological issues in his back end. After being fully assessed by the Vet he was put on medication, but sadly it became obvious that he was in pain and stressed and it was time to let him go. Following further discussions with the Vet and his long term sponsor he was humanely euthanized on 17th January 2025 in accordance with the Epona Trust policies and procedures.
Big Nathan will be remembered for his polite stable manners and gentle nature. We will very much miss seeing his handsome face looming round the tack room/office door to see what was going on and to being wholeheartedly licked when in range of his tongue.
